FAQs

  • What is Virtual Orchestra School and how does it work?

VOS is a virtual orchestra class for homeschooling students ages 11+ to learn to play the violin, viola, or cello in an virtual class setting. Students will receive daily feedback on their playing and have opportunities to interact with their classmates daily. Virtual Orchestra School also offers a limited number of private lesson classes and seasonal master classes. The instruction will occur online in real time over Zoom. Virtual Orchestra School is also for adult beginners and offers in person lessons/classes for students in the Houston area.

  • When will classes occur?

Classes will take place Monday-Thursday. Lessons are scheduled individually.

  • When does registration close?

Registration will close when class spots are full. Enrollment closure will be clearly communicated on the website homepage and social media accounts. At that time students are added to the waitlist.

  • Does the student need to know anything about music?

No prior musical knowledge or experience is required.

  • Is Virtual Orchestra School accepting intermediate or advanced students?

Currently I am only enrolling students to participate in beginner classes. At the end of each September- May term those students will graduate up to intermediate and advanced levels with each year that passes. If you have an intermediate or advanced student interested in private lessons please book a consultation.

  • Do you accept students under age 10?

Yes, on a case by case basis. My expertise lies with students age 10+

  • Should I buy or rent an instrument?

I always recommend renting an instrument when your student is trying something new. I have done business with Katy Violin Shop and been impressed with their customer service and care. They will ship free to anywhere in the lower 48 states. You can purchase the items on my supply list from them as well--even if you rent your instrument somewhere else. Katy Violin Shop offers free return shipping anytime.

  • What are the supplies needed?

If you choose to rent from Katy Violin Shop then contact them directly to order the instrument and supplies for Virtual Orchestra School. They have all the below supplies on file and will take care of your order. It’s a very easy one stop shop. You will not need to purchase any additional supplies with the exception of a metronome. You will need to know the size instrument needed: sizing tutorial for violin/viola, and a sizing tutorial for cello.

If you choose to purchase your instrument/supplies elsewhere these are what is required:

  • Instrument in the correct size for your student. Sizing tutorial for violin/viola. Sizing tutorial for cello.

  • Essential Elements for Strings Book 1 (for your student’s instrument)

  • Rosin & Cloth (usually included with the instrument rental)

  • Xeros Endpin Anchor (for cellos only)

  • Chair/bench that doesn’t roll and has no arms. Here are some tips for selecting a chair. (cellos only)

  • Metronome and Tuner. The app Tonal Energy is the one I use, but there are many to choose from.
